Bloc magazine winter 24-25

31 Curated with a balance of nostalgia and modernity, the exhibition features over 200 dolls, alongside a treas- ure trove of artwork, rare prototypes, and unique de- signer collaborations. Visitors can explore the chang- ing face of Barbie, from her original incarnation as a blonde bombshell in a black-and-white swimsuit to the diverse, inclusive doll range of today. The exhibition highlights how Barbie has mirrored social changes, embracing different ethnicities, body shapes, and pro- fessions, allowing her to evolve from a traditional role model into a symbol of empowerment and possibility. The fashion section is one of the exhibition’s major draws, showcasing high-end designer outfits created for Barbie by big names like Christian Dior, Moschino, and VivienneWestwood. The dazzling displays capture the imagination, while also underlining the doll's influ- ential role in fashion. For many, Barbie has been more than just a toy – she has also been a blank canvas for creativity, design, and storytelling. One of the most compelling sections focuses on Bar- bie’s impact beyond the toybox, exploring her role as a reflection of cultural and gender shifts. Through inter- active exhibits, visitors can engage with the debates surrounding her representation and how Mattel, Bar- bie’s creator, has adapted her image to resonate with new generations of children and adults alike. The exhibition runs through early 2025 and offers a fun, informative, and thought-provoking experience for vis- itors of all ages. Whether you’re a lifelong Barbie fan or simply curious about her cultural significance, "Barbie: Reimagined" at The Design Museum promises to take you on a vibrant journey through this iconic doll’s ev- er-evolving legacy.
